How Can I Keep From Singing? Learn to Sing Old West Virginia Songs

This workshop is hosted by the Mountain Music Trail

Come share in the old-time, eye-to-eye and knee-to-knee singing of songs and ballads collected by Michael Kline from old West Virginia singers over the past forty years. At this workshop we will immerse ourselves in old songs which resonate with local stories not usually found in history books, stories of life in the old forests lived among the giant trees.

Through the frame of local culture, landscapes and history we will hear about singers from generations past. How did these songs come to dwell in them? How and why does the oral tradition persist into our own times? We’ll ask these questions and sing, sing, sing some of the old songs, guided by West Virginia folklorists and musical duo Michael and Carrie Kline. No experience needed, no ability to sing. Bring your love of traditional culture.
